Date night in Barcelona

The short answer

A comedy show is an easy date night in Barcelona, because it gives the two of you a plan with a start time, a price and a talking point. The Comedy Clubhouse runs English-language shows most evenings in two rooms. Three of them suit a date well, and each costs 12 euros or less a head online.

Pick Wednesday Night Comedy at 21:00 if you want a midweek date and a kitchen on site. Pick Typical Adult Behavior, an improv show, at 20:00 on a Thursday if you would rather watch something made up on the spot. Pick The Saturday Spotlight at 20:00 if the date is the main event of the week.

Three shows we would book first

Wednesday Night Comedy

It is a showcase: several comedians in one line-up, so no single act has to carry the night. The club pitches it as a midweek night out that does not wait for the weekend. It starts at 21:00 in The Lounge at Laietana and the listing runs until 22:30.

The online price is €8, the door price is €10, and four or more pay €7 each online. For two people, the online route saves two euros each on the door price. The free pub quiz upstairs at 20:00 is a warm-up if you want an hour before the show.

Typical Adult Behavior

It is improv: unscripted scenes, made up in front of you. It starts at 20:00 on Thursdays in The Lounge, and the listing runs until 21:45. The price is the same as Wednesday, €8 online and €10 at the door.

Improv suits a date because no two nights match, so it gives the two of you something new to talk about. It also ends early enough to leave time for dinner, or for a late drink at the bar. Our improv guide lists the other English improv nights.

The Saturday Spotlight

The Saturday Spotlight is the club's main weekend showcase, and our Top 10 of shows puts it third. Its usual home is Canvis Nous. It starts at 20:00, the listing runs until 21:45, and the ticket is €12 online, €15 at the door, or €10 each for four or more.

Shows built around dating

Four titles in the data use romance as their subject. None runs every week, so check the dated list for the day you are in town.

• LOLyamorous, a speed-dating comedy show. Audience pairs have a two-minute date on stage, and are then questioned and roasted. It runs about once a month at Laietana, at 20:00 or 21:00, for €10 to €12 online.
• Laughs at First Sight, an hour-long show about dating at Laietana. It is a Sunday 20:00 listing, €10 online, €12 at the door.
• Too Naughty Comedy, a showcase of jokes about sex and love, hosted by a comedian. It is a Wednesday 21:30 show at €10 online.
• Sid Singh Presents: Best Medicine, in which comedians answer relationship problems with improvised comedy. It was a Saturday 20:00 show at €10 online.

A word of warning. In LOLyamorous the audience is part of the act. If you sit near the front, you may be asked to go on stage. Say so to your date before you book, or sit near the back. The other three titles are performances you watch.

A date night by budget

Add drinks and dinner. We found no minimum order at either room, so the ticket is the floor. The club's kitchen means the food bill can stay in the same building.

Dinner and drinks

Only Laietana has a kitchen. Eat upstairs in The Alcove during the show, or order for The Lounge ahead of time. Per the club, the kitchen keeps serving once the show ends, so a late meal is possible without leaving.

Canvis Nous has a bar and no food. For a Friday or Saturday show there, book a table nearby before the show and leave time to walk. The two rooms are a short walk apart. We do not rate restaurants, so we name none.

A show lasts between one and two hours. A 20:00 start usually ends about 21:45, which leaves the evening open. A 21:00 start ends about 22:30, which suits a drink and then a late dinner.

Three sample evenings

A midweek date

Start at 20:00 with the quiz, which is free, in The Alcove. Order food during it. At 21:00 move downstairs to Wednesday Night Comedy. You spend €8 each on the show, and the evening ends about 22:30. Both parts are in one building, so there is nothing to book except the show.

A Saturday night

Eat early. Be at Canvis Nous for a 20:00 start at The Saturday Spotlight, which costs €12 each. The show ends about 21:45. After it, the late music night at Laietana starts at 23:00 and is free. That leaves an hour to find a drink in between.

A Thursday of improv

Take the 20:00 improv show, which ends about 21:45 and costs €8 each. If the night is going well, the bilingual Spanglish Show starts at 22:00 in the same room and costs €10 each online. You see two different formats for 18 euros a head.

Practical points for two

Book together so you are seated together, and be there before the start, because latecomers may be refused. The club sets 18 as its general minimum age.

We do not know how the seating is laid out. The clubs publish no capacity and no seating plan, so we cannot say whether you sit at tables or in rows. Ask the club if it matters. Its phone and WhatsApp number is on the room reviews. For the trip home after a late show, check the night bus on TMB.

If you both speak Spanish

The Top 10 lists other rooms for a Spanish-language date. Barcelona Comedy Club runs a Thursday monologue night in the Born, at 20:30 for €10 with a drink. Craft Barcelona runs a Sunday monologue show with a drink from €12. Club Cronopios lists sessions with a drink from €10.

What to skip

Skip the open mics as a first date. They are free, but the line-up is whoever signs up, and the quality varies. They suit a relaxed outing better than a first date. Skip late-night shows if you have an early start: the late slots run past midnight.

Skip a show where you cannot tell the language. A joke you cannot follow is a long hour. And skip the dearest ticket unless the comedian is one you both know.

How we chose these shows

We looked for four things in the data. The first is a fixed start time. The second is a running time of about two hours at most. The third is a host or a line-up, so one weak act does not sink the night. The fourth is a stated price.

We have not been to the rooms, so we say nothing about the mood in them. First-hand notes will be marked as such when they exist. We also hold no menu or drink prices, so we cannot add up a full evening for two. The ticket price is the only number here you can rely on.
