The short answer
There are two places to learn comedy in English that publish dates. The Clubhouse: Laietana runs free drop-in workshops. Writing for stand-up runs on Saturday afternoons, improv and clown alternate on Sunday afternoons, and a one-off on writing jokes for social media ran in Fringe week. Barcelona Improv Group runs paid improv courses and a Sunday drop-in.
If you want to try stand-up, go to the writing workshop. If you want to loosen up, go to improv. If you want to play, go to clown. The dated list at the top of this page shows each session coming up, with the room and the time.
The paid option is improv. Barcelona Improv Group lists six-week courses from €155 and a Sunday drop-in at €15, at its school on Carrer del Comte Borrell. We found no dated stand-up or sketch course in English. Read the section on what we do not know before you plan around one.
Three free sessions. Writing: Saturday 15:00 to 17:00. Improv or clown: Sunday 15:00 to 17:30, alternating. All at Laietana, in English. Reserve on the event page. Data read on 2 November 2026.

The workshops at a glance
| Workshop | When | Where | Length | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Open Writing Workshop | Every Saturday, 15:00 | Laietana, The Alcove | Two hours | Free |
| Open Improv Workshop | Every other Sunday, 15:00 | Laietana, The Lounge | Two and a half hours | Free; one listing says pay what you want |
| Open Clown Workshop | Every other Sunday, 15:00 | Laietana, The Lounge | Two and a half hours | Free |
| Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying) | A single date in festival week, 11:00 | Laietana, The Lounge | One to two hours | Free |
The improv and clown sessions alternate. In the November 2026 listings, improv ran on one Sunday and clown on the next. Check the dated list for the type on the day you want.

Open Writing Workshop
The club describes it as a weekly session for writing comedy. It is tagged for stand-up and runs on Saturdays from 15:00 to 17:00 in The Alcove at Laietana. That is the upper floor, where you can eat during a show.
It is a drop-in. You do not sign up for a course, and the event page lists a ticket at €0. The page names no teacher, no syllabus and no group size, so we cannot say what a session contains beyond its title.
What we can say is where it sits in the week. The workshop ends at 17:00, and Show Up Go Up, a free open mic, starts at 17:00 in the same room. A set written in the workshop can go on stage the same afternoon. Our open mics guide explains how that night works.

Improv and clown workshops
These two run on Sundays at 15:00 and last about two and a half hours, in The Lounge, the lower floor. The club says each runs every other Sunday, so together they fill the whole month. The improv one is tagged as improv comedy, and the other as clown.
Improv is scenes with no script. Clown is a physical, playful style of performing. The pages do not describe the exercises, and we will not guess at them. Ask the club if you want to know whether a session is about performing for others or playing among yourselves.
The price needs a caveat. The club's page lists a ticket at €0. A ticket platform lists the improv one as pay what you want. If a donation is expected, it will be said at the door. Bring a few euros and treat it as optional.
Our improv guide lists the shows you can watch before you try it yourself. The weekly one is Typical Adult Behavior, an improv show on Thursdays.

Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying)
This is a one-off from festival week at Laietana, in The Lounge, at 11:00. The event page describes it as a workshop about writing jokes for the algorithm, which means short comedy for social media. It is free and in English.
One detail to check: the listing shows an hour, from 11:00 to 12:00, while the page text calls it a two-hour workshop. We cannot resolve that, so read the event page before you plan the rest of your morning. We do not know whether it will run again.
It is also the only workshop in the data aimed at people who write for the internet, not for a stage. If you make short videos, it is the one to look for when the club runs its next festival.

Which one first
- You want to try stand-up. Take the writing workshop on a Saturday, then stay for the open mic.
- You are shy and want to loosen up. Take the improv session. It is free, it is short, and nothing is written down.
- You like physical comedy. Take the clown session.
- You write for social media. Look for Go Viral next festival week.
- You just want to watch. Skip the workshops and go to a Thursday improv show, or to a showcase from our Top 10 comedy shows.
Whatever you pick, go to a show first if you have never seen the format. A Thursday improv show costs €8 online and a showcase from €8 to €12, and it tells you what the workshop is for.

A Saturday and a Sunday, planned
A Saturday that starts with comedy writing can fill the whole day. The workshop runs from 15:00 to 17:00 in The Alcove. Show Up Go Up follows in the same room from 17:00 to 18:30. At 20:00, The Saturday Spotlight starts at Canvis Nous for €12 online, and you see what a finished set looks like.
A Sunday works the same way. The improv or clown workshop runs from 15:00 to 17:30 in The Lounge. Jamnation Salvation, an improv show, starts at 17:15 on the second and fourth Sunday, fifteen minutes before the workshop ends, so you would leave early to catch it. Sunday Night Comedy starts at 20:00 for €10 online.
Both days cost almost nothing before the evening. That makes the workshops an easy fit for a visitor with a free afternoon, as well as for someone who lives here and wants a weekly habit. The sessions repeat, so a miss is not final.
Source: the dated event pages of the sessions and shows named, read on 2 November 2026.
Who the workshops suit
Visitors can use them as a free afternoon in English with other people. They are drop-in, and they sit in a bar that serves drinks. A first-time visitor with a weekend in town has a Saturday and a Sunday to choose from.
Residents and new arrivals can use them as a weekly habit. The Saturday session is the one that repeats every week, so it works as a standing date in the diary.
Performers who already do stand-up can use the improv session to practise listening, and the writing session to work through a set. We make that point as a suggestion, not as a finding: the pages do not say who attends.
Groups are possible, though no group price applies to free sessions. If you plan to bring friends, check with the club whether the room has space. See the group night out guide for how groups book the paid shows.

After the workshop: where to try it
The Clubhouse puts the next step in the same building. Show Up Go Up runs on Saturday at 17:00 and on Friday at 17:30, free. Big Mic Energy, on the first and third Tuesday, welcomes women, non-binary comedians and first-timers.
For improv, Jamnation Salvation runs on the second and fourth Sunday at 17:15 in The Alcove. It is listed as improv and it is free. The club's improv and clown tags give you a way to find more.
Nobody from this site has joined any of these yet, so nothing here says how it feels to take part. What we can say is that the sessions are free, weekly, and a short walk from each other. Compare that with a paid course, and the cost of trying is low.

What we do not know
The event pages say little. They give the title, the day, the time, the room, the price and a one-line description. They do not name a teacher, a level, a class size, a syllabus or what to bring.
- Whether a beginner needs any experience.
- How many people a session holds, and whether places are limited.
- Whether you must book, or may arrive on the day.
- Who leads each session.
- Whether the improv workshop takes donations.
The club lists an email address and a WhatsApp number on its room reviews. Ask before you go if one of these matters. We will add the answers here when we have them.
Other options and leads
Barcelona Improv Group, known as BIG, is the one school with dated courses. Foundations of Improv 1 runs on Thursday evenings for six weeks from 29 October 2026, for €155, with 14 places and a waitlist. Foundations 2 needs the first course. PowerUp, a project course, costs €170. The Sunday Open Workshop is a drop-in at €15.
One caution: BIG does not state the teaching language on its classes page. Its shows are in English, so we take the classes to be in English too, and the cards above mark that as inferred. The Clubhouse also lists a free stand-up workshop in Italian on some Sundays.
Jokes & Beers, an English open mic, showed no dated 2026 event. We found no sketch course in English and no dated multi-week stand-up course. A class sold by message would not appear in the pages we read, so tell us if you know one.

Practical points
All the workshops are in English. The Clubhouse admits adults only by default. Both floors involve stairs: the upper floor has wide steps and no handrail, and the lower floor has several flights with a handrail on part of them. Tell the club in advance if you need help.
The workshops cost nothing, but the room is a bar. Plan on a drink. For the metro, use the planner on TMB, because the club's pages name no station.
For the rest of the week, see what is on this week. Both rooms are reviewed in full: Laietana and Canvis Nous. Our Top 10 comedy clubs ranks them first and second.

Questions people ask
Are there comedy workshops in Barcelona in English?
Yes, at The Clubhouse: Laietana. In our data it runs a free Open Writing Workshop on Saturday afternoons, and free Open Improv and Open Clown Workshops on Sunday afternoons that alternate from week to week. A one-off workshop on writing jokes for social media ran during the Barcelona Fringe. All are listed in English.
Are the Clubhouse workshops really free?
The Clubhouse event pages list them at €0. One ticket platform listing for the improv workshop says pay what you want, and the club's own page does not. We cannot settle that from here, so bring a few euros and check the event page. Either way, no fixed fee appears on any workshop page we read.
Do I need experience to join a comedy workshop?
The event pages state no required level, and the workshops are called open, which suggests that beginners are welcome. We cannot confirm that, because the pages give no syllabus and no teacher. If you are unsure, send the club a message with your experience and ask which workshop suits you before you turn up.
What is the difference between improv and clown workshops?
Improv builds scenes with no script, usually with other people. Clown is a physical, playful style of performing. The club runs both on Sunday afternoons in the same room, one after the other from week to week. The pages do not describe the exercises, so ask the club what a session covers.
Can I learn to do stand-up in a weekend?
Not fully, but you can start. The writing workshop on Saturday at 15:00 helps you write a first set, and the open mic that starts at 17:00 in the same room lets you test it. Many people need several attempts. Our open mics guide lists the nights that suit a beginner.
Where can I take a paid comedy course in Barcelona?
Barcelona Improv Group runs six-week improv courses from €155 at its school on Carrer del Comte Borrell, plus a Sunday drop-in at €15. Its classes page does not state the teaching language, so we infer English from its shows. We found no dated stand-up or sketch course in English.
