The short answer
You can take comedy classes in English in Barcelona from two providers. The Comedy Clubhouse runs free drop-in workshops in stand-up writing, improv and clown. Barcelona Improv Group, known as BIG, runs a paid Sunday drop-in and six-week improv courses. That is the whole list we could verify on 2 November 2026.
If you want to try a class this week, the free sessions are the way in. If you want to learn improv properly, BIG's courses are the structured route, but the current intakes had already started. If you want a stand-up course in English, we found none with a date. The English stand-up and open mics guide lists where to perform instead.
Free drop-ins: writing on Saturday, improv and clown on alternate Sundays, all at Laietana. Paid drop-in: BIG, Sunday 17:00, €15. Courses: BIG, six weeks, €155 or €170.

The Clubhouse sessions are all held at Laietana, the writing workshop in The Alcove and the other two in The Lounge. The BIG classes take place at its school on Carrer del Comte Borrell 143. Older Eventbrite listings call some Clubhouse sessions pay what you want, so confirm at the door.

Which class suits a beginner?
For a first try, the free drop-ins cost nothing and ask for no commitment. The Saturday writing session is the closest to stand-up, since it is a workshop for writing jokes. The improv and clown sessions suit people who prefer to play in a group.
For a paid first step, BIG's Sunday Open Workshop is the one the page marks as open and beginner friendly. It lasts two hours and has 14 places. At €15 it costs less than most showcase tickets, and it runs every Sunday, not on alternate weeks.
The Clubhouse sessions state no level and no teacher. We cannot say who leads them. Our free workshops post lists the November dates and what we do not know.

How do the BIG courses work?
BIG sells improv in tiers. Foundations 1 is the entry course: six weeks on Thursdays from 19:30 to 22:00, taught by Pol Subirana, with a student showcase on 6 December. It has 14 places and the page showed a waitlist.
Foundations 2 follows it. It needs Foundations 1 and an application by email. Two groups run, on Tuesdays with Ritxi Olive and on Thursdays with Ella Galt, both from 16:30 to 19:00. Each costs €155.
PowerUp is a project course on Thursdays from 17:00 to 19:00, taught by Kiva Murphy, for €170. It is open, with no requirements and 14 places. All three began in the last days of October 2026, so the next intakes are unknown. Our improv guide covers the shows the students go on to.
BIG does not state the language of instruction on its classes page. It describes itself as an English-language group, so we infer that the classes are in English. Confirm this with the school before you pay.

What about clown and one-off courses?
The Clubhouse runs a Comedy Schoolhouse with more than drop-ins. Two paid clown events appeared in October 2026. One was Introduction to Clown, a 3.5 hour session at Canvis Nous for €30, and Being Bad with Piotr, a five-day clown intensive from €340. Both are in the past. They show what the school offers, not what is open.
The school also lists a free stand-up workshop for beginners in Italian, held on some Sundays, with six dates from October 2026 to April 2027. It is not in English. The page mentions eight-week courses and intensives but lists none, so we do not count them.
Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying), a one-off on 9 November at 11:00, is a free workshop on writing jokes for social media. The page lists it as one hour but describes two. See the workshops guide for the full list.

What is missing?
We found no sketch comedy course in English in Barcelona. We found no dated multi-week stand-up course in English for 2026.
We also found no stated cap or requirement to book for the free Clubhouse sessions. Nobody from this site has attended a class, so we describe none. If you take one and want to tell us about it, write through the contact page and we will add it with the date.

How do classes connect to open mics?
The writing workshop at 15:00 on Saturday sits two hours before Show Up Go Up, the free open mic in the same room. That pairing is the shortest route from class to stage that we found. Our open mic guide covers the list.
BIG students show their work at student showcases in early December, and BIG runs English improv shows on its calendar. For those, see the Top 10 comedy shows and the Canvis Nous review.

Questions people ask
Are there comedy classes in English in Barcelona?
Yes, for improv and clown, from two providers. The Comedy Clubhouse runs free drop-in workshops in writing, improv and clown. Barcelona Improv Group runs a paid Sunday drop-in and six-week courses. We found no dated multi-week stand-up course in English for 2026, and no sketch course. The Clubhouse page mentions longer courses but lists none.
Which class is cheapest?
The Clubhouse drop-ins are free: the Saturday writing workshop, and the improv and clown sessions on alternate Sundays. Among paid options, the BIG Sunday Open Workshop costs €15 for two hours. The six-week courses cost €155 for Foundations and €170 for PowerUp. Older Eventbrite titles call some Clubhouse sessions pay what you want, so confirm at the door.
Do I need experience?
Not for the open sessions. BIG describes its Sunday Open Workshop as open and beginner friendly, with 14 places, and Foundations 1 as having no requirements. Foundations 2 needs Foundations 1 and an application by email. The Clubhouse pages state no level for its free workshops, so ask the club if you are unsure.
Are the BIG classes in English?
Probably, but the classes page does not say. BIG describes itself as an English-language improv group and lists its shows in English, so we infer the classes are too. Check with the school by email before you pay, especially if you need English instruction to follow the exercises.
Can I join a course that has already started?
Not the ones we found. The Foundations and PowerUp courses began on 27 and 29 October 2026 and run for six weeks, and the Foundations 1 page showed a waitlist. We did not find the next intake dates. The drop-in sessions, free or paid, are the way to start sooner.
Is there a class for stand-up?
Only drop-ins. The free Open Writing Workshop runs every Saturday at 15:00 at Laietana, and the Clubhouse runs a stand-up workshop for beginners in Italian on some Sundays. A multi-week stand-up course in English was not dated for 2026 when we read the pages. The open mics are the practical alternative for stage time.
