The short answer
Barcelona has one clear source of free comedy workshops in English. It is The Clubhouse: Laietana, with its Open Writing, Open Improv and Open Clown sessions and one extra writing session called Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying). In November 2026 we found five dated sessions, all free, all in English.
If you want to write jokes, go to the Saturday writing workshop on 21 or 28 November. If you want to play, go to the improv session on Sunday 22 November or the clown session on Sunday 29 November. All start at 15:00 and sit on weekends, which suits a short visit.
This post lists the sessions, explains how they differ from open mics, and says what we do not know. For every workshop and open mic in date order, see our comedy workshops guide and the English stand-up and open mics guide.
Where. All five sessions are at The Clubhouse: Laietana, Via Laietana 6, 08003 Barcelona, in the Ciutat Vella district. The writing workshop uses The Alcove, upstairs, and the improv and clown workshops use The Lounge, downstairs.

The five sessions
| Session | Date and time | Room | Length | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying) | Mon 9 Nov, 11:00 | The Lounge | Listed 1 hour, described as 2 hours | Free |
| Open Writing Workshop | Sat 21 Nov, 15:00 | The Alcove | 2 hours | Free |
| Open Improv Workshop | Sun 22 Nov, 15:00 | The Lounge | 2 hours 30 minutes | Free |
| Open Writing Workshop | Sat 28 Nov, 15:00 | The Alcove | 2 hours | Free |
| Open Clown Workshop | Sun 29 Nov, 15:00 | The Lounge | 2 hours 30 minutes | Free |
The lengths come from the start and end times on the event pages. One listing is inconsistent: Go Viral shows a one-hour slot, from 11:00 to 12:00, while its description calls it a two-hour workshop. Confirm the length with the club if the end time matters to you.
Go Viral is a one-off in the Fringe week, described as a workshop about writing jokes for the algorithm. It is the only weekday session. The weekend sessions follow a pattern the club states: the writing workshop every Saturday, the improv and clown workshops every other Sunday.

What each workshop is
Open Writing Workshop
The page invites you to join every Saturday for the Open Comedy Writing Workshop and tags it Stand-Up Comedy. It runs for two hours in The Alcove. That is all the page says, so we do not claim to know the format. It is a writing session, not a performance.
It sits next to the Saturday open mic. Show Up Go Up starts at 17:00 in the same Alcove, free, and describes itself as the most relaxed open mic in Barcelona, where anyone who shows up can perform. A writing hour followed by a stage slot is a natural pairing.
Open Improv Workshop
An Open Improv Workshop on alternate Sundays, from 15:00 to 17:30 in The Lounge. The tags are Free, Improv Comedy and In English. An Eventbrite listing titled with every Sunday and marked pay what you want also appears in search results. We could not confirm it, so we count the club's own page.
The evening of the same Sunday has Sunday Night Comedy at 20:00, and on Thursdays the Typical Adult Behavior improv night at 20:00. A workshop in the afternoon and an improv show at night is a full day of the same craft.
Open Clown Workshop
The same Sunday slot, on the other Sundays: Open Clown Workshop from 15:00 to 17:30 in The Lounge. The page says every other Sunday and tags it Clown, Free and In English. It is the rarest of the five formats, because no other clown session appears in our data.
Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying)
A workshop on Monday 9 November at 11:00 in The Lounge, free, in English, described as a workshop about writing jokes for the algorithm. It falls in Fringe week. The club lists it as coming soon, which means the booking button was not yet open on 2 November.

Workshops, open mics and stage time
A workshop teaches and an open mic lets you perform. If you want stage time, the free open mics at Laietana are the way in. Coming In Hot and Fat Goose start at 19:30 on Monday and Tuesday, Shitty Mic at 21:00 on Monday, and Show Up Go Up on Friday and Saturday afternoons.
Big Mic Energy runs at 21:00 on the first and third Tuesday and invites women, non-binary comedians and first-timers. The Anything Else? open mic, monthly on a Friday, takes music, spoken word and storytelling. It costs €5 online, so it is not free.
Elsewhere, Thorny Thursday at Secret Comedy Club is a try-out night on Thursdays from 22:00, listed as weekly until 17 December 2026. The Gong Wild show at Canvis Nous gives anyone who signs up six minutes, though it has only one date in November. Jokes & Beers lists no 2026 dates.
Barcelona Improv Group lists English improv shows on Fever, such as #Adulting from 7 November at €12. That is a show, not a workshop, and we have not verified the group's classes. For the week ahead, open what's on this week, and see our recurring comedy nights for the weekly improv at Laietana.

Who each session suits
A visitor on a short stay should pick the weekend session closest to their dates. All start at 15:00, which leaves the evening free for a show. The easiest pairing is Saturday 21 November: the writing workshop at 15:00, then The Saturday Spotlight at 20:00 at Canvis Nous.
A newcomer who wants to meet people should try the improv workshop. Improv is played in a group, and it needs no prepared material. A shy writer will prefer the writing session, where the work is quiet. Neither page states a level, so ask the club if you are a complete beginner.
A regular who wants more stage time can combine a workshop with the open mics. The Clubhouse puts them in one building, with a kitchen on site. That makes it practical to stay from the afternoon into the evening and eat there.

How to join
Open the event page on the Clubhouse site and look for a booking button. The five workshop pages we read list entry as free and show no price. Four of them, all but the clown session, were marked coming soon on 2 November, so booking may not have opened yet.
We found no stated cap on places and no stated requirement to book. Both could exist. The club answers questions by email, phone and WhatsApp. Our review of Laietana lists the contact details.
Be early. For a show, a seat is only held until the start, and a workshop is likely to work the same way, though the pages do not say. Mind the stairs: the upper floor has wide steps and no handrail, and the lower floor has several flights. Tell the club ahead if you need help.
For the metro, use TMB, because the sources we read name no station. If you want a nearby second room, Canvis Nous is about two minutes away on foot.

What we do not know
We know the date, the room, the length and the price from the pages. We do not know the format of a session, how many people attend, who leads it or what level it assumes. The pages are two lines long. Nobody from this site has attended a workshop yet, so nothing here describes one.
When someone from the site has attended a session, the write-up will appear on this page with the date of the visit. We re-read the club's pages every Monday, so the list changes when a date does. The what's on in November post shows where the sessions sit in the month.

Questions people ask
Are the comedy workshops really free?
The five workshop pages we read list entry as free: the Open Writing Workshop, the Open Improv Workshop, the Open Clown Workshop and Go Viral (Or Have Fun Trying), all at The Clubhouse: Laietana. We found no ticket price on any of them. An Eventbrite listing for an improv session is marked pay what you want, so check which one you are booking.
Do I need experience?
The pages ask for none. They are called open workshops, and the open mics around them describe themselves as running from pros to newbies. We do not know the level of each session, because the pages are short. If you are unsure, write to the club before you go and ask what a beginner should expect.
Are the workshops in English?
Yes. Each of the five lists English on its event page, and the club files them under In English. A visitor with little Spanish or Catalan can join without translation. The room is Laietana, at Via Laietana 6 in Ciutat Vella, either in The Alcove or in The Lounge.
How many workshops are there in a month?
Our data for 2 to 29 November holds five workshop dates. One falls on 9 November, two writing sessions on 21 and 28 November, an improv session on 22 November and a clown session on 29 November. The club describes the writing workshop as weekly, and the improv and clown ones as every other Sunday.
What is the minimum age?
The club's default is adults only. Teenagers from 16 may come with a grown-up, and anyone younger needs a special agreement, so write to the club first. The workshop pages do not state a different rule, so assume the general one and ask the club before you bring anyone younger.
